This year has been a major year of growth and self-discovery for me. I did a major overhaul on my life and implemented a lot of changes. As such, I read a lot of self-help books to get to that point. In the past, I've viewed self-help books as sort of cheesy and cliche; however, after diving into the genre head first, I can now say I am a woman obsessed. In this post I want to share with you my 4 favorite self-help books that I feel are incredibly helpful for those with anxiety. Without further adieu…

You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero. I absolutely love this book and cannot say enough good things about it. Often anxiety causes a great deal of self-doubt which can lead to a lack of self-confidence and low self-esteem. This book is great for bolstering both. Sincero is smart, witty, and gives tons of real life examples. I really love all of the affirmations and homework she gives throughout the book. I'll definitely be re-reading this one in the near future.

Change Your Brain, Change Your Life (Revised and Expanded): The Breakthrough Program for Conquering Anxiety, Depression, Obsessiveness, Lack of Focus, Anger, and Memory Problems by Dr. Daniel Amen. This book is based on years of research based on over 100,000 SPECT brain scans. Perfect for anyone who prefers science over personal experiences. Dr. Amen discusses various parts of the brain and how each is related to certain mental health issues including anxiety, depression, and OCD. He also proposes that you're not stuck with the brain you were born with. In fact, you can alter the structure of your brain through Dr. Amen's four circle interventions (biological, psychological, social, and spiritual). This is a great book if you are wanting to understand the science part of mental health.

1. Be impeccable with your word.

2. Don't take anything personally.

3. Don't make assumptions.

4. Always do your best.

This book is amazing and can really change your outlook/perspective on life.

The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. This book reads more like a novel than your typical self-help book, but is full of insightful treasures from the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu. They have endured decades of oppression, exile, and violence, and yet they are considered to be two of the most joyful people on the planet. The book details a week long visit between the two friends and offers great life lessons about focusing on the good and meaningful things in life.

Have you read any of these books? What are your thoughts? What books would you add to this list? I'd love to hear from you!
