I love learning new things. Shocking, I know since I'm a professor, but seriously, I love enriching my life with new information, experiences, and people. This is also one of the reasons I constantly have mounds of unfinished projects and books, but that's a part for another day!
For years, I struggled with getting enough sleep and subsequently getting up in the morning. I hated mornings. It was always a struggle which then set the stage for a rough day. I then implemented 3 things that changed everything:
1. Water
2. Magnesium
3. The Miracle Morning
I discuss drinking enough water a lot on my Facebook page. Everyone is always talking about drinking enough water and let's face it, sometimes it's pretty annoying. But in honestly, drinking tons of water was a game changer for my anxiety. Believe or not, over 75% of the US population is chronically dehydrated, which means your body can't function the way it was designed to function. This can lead to a long list of health issues, including symptoms of anxiety!
When I started drinking at least 70 ounces of water every day, I started to see huge changes. I stopped getting headaches and body aches, my skin was super smooth and bright, the mental fog went away, I slept better at night, I had tons of energy during the day, and getting up in the morning was a breeze! It also helped me to think more clearly which in turn helped squash many of my anxious thoughts because I was more clear-headed to deal with them. Water to your body is like gas to your car. Your body needs fuel to work properly. Water is an easy and cheap fix, so you have no reason not to try it!
Magnesium. I recently sung magnesium's praises in another blog post, so I won't go into too much detail here. If you want to check out the details regarding magnesium, you can read all about it: here. Start a magnesium supplement (this is one I take) or up your intake of magnesium-rich foods TODAY. Seriously. You'll thank me later. ;-)
Finally, the Miracle Morning. I recently read (and finished) the Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. I kept hearing about in various Facebook groups and once a friend of mine mentioned that she had just picked it up, I figured it was a sign that I should too. So I did.
The basic premise of the book revolves around doing certain activities in the morning so that you set the tone for a positive, productive day. That sounds awesome, right? Well the only catch is that you have to get up one hour earlier every day in order to do these activities. This is why consuming tons of water and taking magnesium is crucial. You will not want to get out of bed or keep up with your new routine if you do not feel well rested.
Here are the lifesavers that Hal outlines:
1. Sit in silence or meditate
2. Recite affirmations
3. Visualize your day/future
4. Exercise
5. Read
6. Journal
Some people simply can't fit an extra hour of the morning into their day. If you want, you can do this at night. Alternatively, or when you're just starting out, try doing each of these activities for 1 minute each. It doesn't matter as long as your mind is getting into the same positive, productive mindset.
I've been doing this for about 30 days now and while it was challenging in the beginning, it has become easy and has had profound effects. I have found myself to be less anxious first thing in the morning because I've taken the time to settle myself, pep myself up, and plan out my day. I have found that I have more patience and understanding for other people. I've found myself to be happier because I've carved out time just for me and no one else.
There are even companion resources that go along with the book like a journal, planner, and affirmations coloring book.
Are you willing to change your life for better? Have you read and implemented these ideas? Were you able to stick with it? What changes did you see? I'd love to hear about your experience!
