One of the best decisions I ever made was to start saying "YES" to myself, which unsurprisingly, means you must say "NO" to a lot of things. For example:

*Perfection

*Expectations

*Guilt

*Shame

*Embarrassment

*Competition

*Comparison

It's not easy, but the more I say "NO" to these things, the happier I feel with my life and my choices. The ability to say "NO" not only shows others that you are in control of your life, but it also shows you that you are in control. That you're making yourself a priority. When you're an anxious person, there is no better feeling in the world. It really gives you a sense of empowerment.

So here are my top 10 ways to say "NO" to s#!t you hate, so that you can say "YES" to yourself:

1. I'm sorry, I'm busy.

2. Maybe next time.

3. No thank you.

4. I wish I could, but I can't.

5. I'd love to, but I'm already over-committed.

6. I'm not able to commit right now.

7. I can't do that right, but here's what I can do...

8. I don't think I'm the right person for this. Maybe you can ask...

9. I can't, but can I help you find a solution?

10. That doesn't work for me.

Of course it's generally important to be respectful when you say "NO" especially if you care about the other person. Be very clear that "NO" means "NO" and not maybe or let me think about it. Also, keep it simple. "NO" is a complete sentence and does not require an explanation.

How do you say "NO?" Who do you have a hard time saying "NO" to? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
